Janss Investment Company Building

Janss Investment Company Building, Mediterranean landmark building in Westwood Village, Los Angeles, United States

Description

The Janss Investment Company Building is an octagonal structure in Westwood Village crowned by a dome decorated with aqua and white zig-zag patterns featuring gold leaf details. This landmark stands at the intersection of Westwood Boulevard and Broxton Avenue and currently houses the Broxton Brewery & Public House within its historic walls.

History

The structure was completed in 1929 as the headquarters of the Janss Investment Company and served as the first development in the newly established Westwood Village commercial district. It gained recognition as Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument number 364 in 1988, securing its architectural and historical importance.

Culture

The second floor originally housed male students from the University of California Los Angeles, creating early ties between this structure and campus life. Today visitors can still sense this academic connection when walking through the spaces and observing how the rooms are arranged.

Practical

This structure sits at an easily recognizable corner in the heart of Westwood Village, making it accessible to pedestrians exploring the area. A restaurant and brewery currently operate on the ground floor, making it a natural stopping point while walking through the neighborhood.

Did you know?

The octagonal shape was an unusual choice for a commercial building in the 1920s and stood out distinctly from the typical rectangular structures of that era. This geometric distinction helped it gain attention and later contributed to its recognition as a cultural landmark.
