Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory, Butterfly conservatory in Key West, United States
Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory is a glass-enclosed facility where dozens of butterfly species fly freely among tropical plants and flowers in a warm, humid environment. The building contains display areas with information about insect biology and the role these creatures play in nature.
The conservatory opened in 2003 after converting a former retail building into a space dedicated to butterfly observation and scientific study. Since then it has grown into an educational center that combines research with visitor experiences.
Butterflies from different tropical regions display the diversity of nature across the globe, and visitors can observe how these insects fit into their native ecosystems. The space celebrates the connection between insects and plants that has existed for millions of years.
The indoor space stays warm and very humid all year, so wear light breathable clothing and allow time to adjust when entering. Move slowly and stay calm throughout your visit to avoid startling or stressing the flying insects.
Two flamingos named Rhett and Scarlett share the conservatory with hundreds of butterflies, creating an unusual mix of different animal species. This surprising combination makes the experience more memorable than a typical butterfly garden.
