The Armory, Military heritage building in Key West, United States
The Armory in Key West is a two-story building on White Street housing spaces for artistic and cultural activities. Inside are artist studios, exhibition areas, and rehearsal rooms for local theater groups.
Monroe County purchased the land in 1901 and hired architect T.F. Russell to design the building to support military training and local reserves. In 1903 the Florida Supreme Court ruled the building should transfer to state ownership, resulting in reimbursement of construction costs.
The building now houses studios for artists, writers, and performers who use the space to create and share their work. The studios on the upper floor and exhibition areas below form a vibrant gathering point for creative activities in the community.
The building is accessible to visitors who want to experience the artistic activities and exhibitions on view. It helps to arrive early enough to take a relaxed walk through the various studios and galleries.
The building was transformed in 2006 into The Studios of Key West, providing artist workspace that is otherwise hard to find in the city. This conversion turned a former military site into an important hub for the local creative community.
