Southernmost House, Hotel in den Vereinigten Staaten
The Southernmost House is a Queen Anne-style hotel from 1896 located at the southern end of Duval Street right on the water. The property has 18 rooms, including separate bungalows, a heated infinity pool with ocean views, a restaurant, and seating areas where guests can watch the Atlantic Ocean.
The house was built in 1896 as a residence for Judge Vining Harris and his wife Florida Curry, daughter of a wealthy businessman. Throughout the 20th century it went through several transformations, serving as a speakeasy, casino, nightclub, and restaurant before becoming the hotel it is today.
The house gets its name from its location at the southernmost point of the continental United States and serves as a symbol of Key West. Visitors notice right away the bright pastel colors and historic architecture that make it a popular photo spot and underscore its importance as a landmark on the island.
The hotel is adults-only (at least 18 or 21 years old) and offers a peaceful stay with onsite parking available for a daily fee. Check-in starts at 4 pm and checkout is at 11 am, and the property is just a short walk from South Beach, though there is no private beach.
During Prohibition, the upstairs served as a casino and nightclub with Cuban music that attracted famous writers, musicians, and even five US presidents. Today visitors can still see historic documents and memorabilia, including papers from Hemingway and other artifacts that recall this lively past.
