National Key Deer Refuge, Wildlife refuge in Florida Keys, United States
The National Key Deer Refuge spans 8,542 acres across Big Pine Key and No Name Key, featuring pine rockland forests, tropical hardwood hammocks, and mangrove wetlands.
The United States Fish and Wildlife Service established this refuge in 1957 to protect the Key deer population, which had decreased to only 25 specimens.
The refuge maintains educational programs about local wildlife conservation, focusing on the protection of 22 endangered plant and animal species native to the Florida Keys.
Visitors can explore the Nature Center from Wednesday to Saturday between 10 AM and 3 PM, accessing detailed information about wildlife observation areas.
The protected Key deer represent North America's smallest deer subspecies, with adults reaching only 50 to 75 pounds in weight.
