Aquarius Reef Base, Underwater research laboratory in Key Largo, Florida, US
Aquarius Reef Base is an undersea laboratory positioned 62 feet (19 meters) beneath the ocean surface off Key Largo, containing living quarters and research facilities for six scientists and technicians. The structure consists of modules designed for extended stays, allowing staff to observe the marine environment continuously.
Florida International University established this permanent undersea laboratory in 1986, marking a turning point in marine research and exploration capabilities. Since then, it has served as a platform for multiple generations of researchers and enabled long-term observation beneath the ocean.
The facility trains NASA astronauts through NEEMO missions, bridging ocean research with space exploration preparation. This connection between marine science and astronaut training shapes how people understand the relationship between Earth's oceans and space missions.
Scientists access the laboratory through a wet porch entry system and can remain underwater for extended periods using specialized diving equipment. Its location in shallow offshore waters makes it relatively accessible for various research projects.
The structure functions as an artificial reef, attracting numerous marine species while researchers can study coral ecosystems continuously. This dual role as both research platform and living habitat makes it a rare example of intentionally created underwater habitats.
