Snake Creek Bridge, Bascule bridge in Islamorada, United States.
Snake Creek Bridge is a bascule bridge connecting Plantation Key and Windley Key in the Florida Keys. It features a single-leaf mechanism that rotates upward to allow boats to navigate through the waterway below.
The bridge was built in 1981 and represents the third structure at this crossing. It succeeded the original Overseas Railroad bridge and a roadway that was constructed in the 1920s.
The bridge serves as a gathering place for fishing enthusiasts who regularly spend time along its railings throughout the year. People come here as part of their local routine, drawn by the good opportunities to catch fish in these waters.
The bridge opens regularly to allow boats to pass through, and boaters should communicate on VHF Channel 9 when requesting passage. Checking the opening schedule beforehand helps ensure you can plan your crossing appropriately.
This is the only operational drawbridge left in the Florida Keys since 2008. The clearance of about 27 feet (8 meters) when raised allows only smaller vessels to pass underneath without requiring the bridge to open.
