Alligator Reef Light, Pile lighthouse near Indian Key, Florida, US.
Alligator Reef Light is an iron lighthouse standing on piles in the waters of the Florida Keys. The octagonal pyramid frame holds a square dwelling and stairway cylinder mounted on black steel piles.
The structure got its name from a Navy schooner that ran aground on the reef in 1822. Operations started in 1873 to help ships find safe passage through the complex waterways.
The lighthouse shows how 19th-century sailors worked to make these dangerous waters safer for ships traveling through the Keys. Its iron frame became a model for coastal construction methods used across the region.
The lighthouse is visible from the water and runs on solar power, making it reliable in varying weather. Visitors will find the best views and access require approaching by boat.
The iron framework was built farther out on the reef than others, allowing its light signals to reach much farther. A recent restoration has kept the structure from deteriorating further.
