African Queen, Historic steamboat in Key Largo, United States
The African Queen is a steamboat in Key Largo, Florida, that features a vertical boiler and riveted steel construction. The vessel measures 30 feet in length and navigates through the waterways of the region.
The T.M. Smith Company built the steamboat in 1912 for use in East Africa, where it transported cargo and passengers. Later it was brought to Florida for filming and took on its new role as a movie vessel.
The vessel takes its name from the 1951 film starring Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart. Visitors today can step aboard and sense the atmosphere of a classic Hollywood production.
The vessel docks at Marina Del Mar near Mile Marker 100 on U.S. Highway 1 and offers guided trips through the canals. Tours typically last about an hour and run several times each day.
The restoration preserved all original mechanical parts from 1912 including the steam engine. These components still function today and power the vessel through Florida waters.
