Carysfort Reef, Coral reef in Monroe County, Florida.
Carysfort Reef is a coral formation located in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, situated off Monroe County. The reef provides habitat for many fish species and invertebrates that live among its branching corals and rocky formations.
The reef takes its name from HMS Carysfort, a ship that ran aground there in 1770. This shipwreck was one of many that occurred along this stretch of coastline during the age of sailing vessels.
Marine researchers conduct regular studies at Carysfort Reef to gather data about coral ecosystems and develop preservation strategies for future generations.
This site is best visited during calm conditions when underwater visibility is good. Access requires a boat, and visitors should be prepared for strong water currents in the area.
More than 30,000 corals have been replanted here through restoration efforts since 2015. This makes it one of the largest reef recovery projects of its kind in the region.
