Up-Park Camp, Military headquarters in Kingston, Jamaica
Up-Park Camp is a military base in the Saint Andrew area of Kingston, Jamaica, made up of barracks, training grounds, administrative buildings, and a heliport. It serves as the central headquarters of the Jamaica Defence Force, with the exception of the Coast Guard.
The British War Department acquired the land in 1784 to build a barracks, after troop mortality in the region had risen sharply. That early garrison became the foundation on which the current installation was built over the following centuries.
The grounds hold memorial areas for soldiers who died in the First and Second World Wars, maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. These quiet corners of the compound give the place a tone of remembrance that stands apart from its everyday military function.
Access to the base is tightly controlled and requires prior authorization from military authorities. Visits are generally only possible through official or institutional channels.
During the Second World War, German prisoners of war were held at the compound and put to work on construction projects within the grounds. This little-known episode shows that the base played a role that went well beyond its usual regional function.
