Guantánamo, Provincial capital in southeastern Cuba.
Guantánamo is the capital of the province of the same name in southeastern Cuba, located between mountain ranges and the coast. The city is crossed by several rivers that flow down from the surrounding mountains and meander through residential neighborhoods.
The city was established in 1797 on the site of the Santa Catalina hacienda and grew into an important trade center in the following decades. During the 19th century it played a significant role in Cuba's independence struggles against Spanish colonial rule.
The name comes from the Taíno language and refers to a place near water where two rivers meet. Residents maintain a distinct musical style that combines African drumming with Cuban rhythms, heard in the streets throughout the city.
Visitors encounter a tropical climate with hot summers and mild winters, rainfall occurs mainly between May and October. The central area is easy to explore on foot, while a rental car or taxi is recommended for trips into the surrounding countryside.
The melody of the famous Cuban song Guantanamera was composed here by José Fernández Díaz, who became known under the name Joseíto Fernández. The lyrics of the song refer to a woman from this region and were later interpreted by musicians worldwide.
