The Trinitary, Secret society in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
La Trinitaria was a secret group in Santo Domingo that worked toward Dominican independence during the Haitian occupation in the 19th century. Members organized themselves in small cells and used coded messages to hide their plans from the authorities.
Juan Pablo Duarte founded the organization in 1838 to fight against Haitian control. The group played a central role in the declaration of Dominican independence on February 27, 1844.
Members used theater performances and artistic expressions to communicate political messages and independence ideals to the Dominican population.
Members met at different locations around the city to avoid suspicion and regularly changed their meeting points. They used passwords and secret signs to recognize each other and protect their messages.
Each member recruited exactly three new participants, creating a network that spread quickly but was difficult to infiltrate. This structure prevented any single member from knowing more than a small part of the organization.
