Weedon Island Preserve

Weedon Island Preserve is a protected coastal area spanning several thousand acres in Pinellas County with mangrove swamps, salt marshes, and upland forest zones along Tampa Bay. The landscape transitions through different habitats that support a wide variety of fish, birds, and other wildlife.

Native Americans lived in this area for thousands of years and left archaeological remains that led researchers to name the Weedon Island Cultural Period after the site. These communities developed deep knowledge of the coastal resources and shaped the region's early cultural development.

The on-site cultural center displays show how indigenous peoples connected with the surrounding landscape and understood the local ecosystems. Visitors can see artifacts and learn about the traditional ways communities used these waters and wetlands.

The preserve features boardwalks, fishing piers, and paddling trails that are open to the public for free exploration and observation. Several viewing platforms are positioned throughout the property to watch birds, fish, and other wildlife without disturbing them.

The preserve serves as a natural buffer zone that protects nearby communities from storm surge and flooding during severe weather. The mangrove swamps and marshes slow down water movement and reduce the force of storms before they reach inland areas.
