The museum opened in 1965 in a building designed by John Volk & Associates on a waterfront site. The institution expanded over time, adding new gallery spaces to accommodate growing collections and rotating exhibitions.
The collection brings together works from Africa, Asia, and the Americas alongside European pieces, showing how different cultures created their own artistic traditions. Walking through the galleries, you notice how artists from different parts of the world approached similar themes in their own ways.

A major expansion in 2008 doubled the size of the building and allowed it to display more artworks while welcoming more visitors. This growth helped the museum become a more prominent cultural center in the city.
