Downtown St. Petersburg Historic District is a neighborhood with more than 300 buildings from different periods, mostly spread along Beach Drive and Central Avenue. The architecture ranges from Mediterranean villas to classical buildings and forms the foundation of the city center.
The neighborhood developed from the late 1800s as pioneers founded the city and built the first structures. In 2004 it received National Register status, which protects these early buildings.
The district houses cultural centers like the Chess Club and several art galleries that regularly show exhibitions. Local residents and visitors use these spaces for events and gatherings.
The area is walkable with open sidewalks and good signage on main streets. Best accessed by public transportation or car with multiple parking spots in the area.
The Lawn Bowling Clubhouse is one of the oldest still-active sports facilities in the country and draws players from around the world. The sport became popular here during the city's early development and is still played today.
