Edson Keith Estate, Historic mansion in Sarasota, Florida.
Edson Keith Estate is an Italian Renaissance building in Sarasota that sits on the southern bank of Phillippi Creek. The property includes servants' quarters, a garden shed, and a garage structure on the grounds.
Business leader Edson Keith Jr. from Chicago acquired the land in 1915 and construction of the residence began in summer 1916. The site was developed as part of a wave of northern wealth moving into the Sarasota area.
The residence reflects the tastes of wealthy northern settlers who brought their architectural preferences south, designed by architects from Chicago. The way the building and gardens are arranged shows how the lifestyle of prosperous newcomers influenced Florida's development.
The property at South Tamiami Trail operates as a public park managed by Sarasota County and hosts community events regularly. Visitors should expect the grounds to be in use for recreational purposes and public gatherings throughout the year.
The land once held evidence of prehistoric Indian settlements and contained a seasonal fishing camp in the 1800s that shipped fish to Cuba. This early commercial activity shows the site had regional importance long before the estate was built.
