Silvermoon Drive-in, Drive-in theater in Lakeland, United States
Silvermoon Drive-in is an outdoor movie theater in Lakeland with two large screens showing double features every night. Visitors tune their car radios to specific FM frequencies to hear the soundtrack.
The Silvermoon opened on April 14, 1948, founded by I. Q. Mize and M. G. Waring; admission was 35 cents and the first film was Up Goes Maisie. A tornado damaged the screen on May 23, 1950, and the theatre reopened on July 1, 1950. Mize and Waring sold it in 1952 to Carl Floyd of Floyd Theaters, and a second screen was added in 1985.
The name comes from the drive-in's original 1948 opening, and the site has stayed in continuous use since then. Harold Spears, appointed president of Floyd Theatres by owner Carl Floyd, bought the Silvermoon in 1996 through his new company Sun South Theatres and kept it running. The cinema marked its 50th anniversary with a gala in 1998.
Arrive early to secure a good spot, as the grounds fill up quickly on warm evenings. It helps to bring snacks from home or take advantage of refreshments available on site.
The tornado of May 23, 1950 damaged the screen, and the theatre reopened on July 1, 1950. I. Q. Mize and M. G. Waring, who had run it since the April 14, 1948 opening, sold it to Carl Floyd of Floyd Theaters in 1952. In 2022 both screens were upgraded to laser projection.
