Memorial Bridge, Four-lane concrete bridge in Palatka, Florida.
Memorial Bridge is a four-lane concrete bridge spanning the St. Johns River in Palatka, connecting the communities on either side of the waterway. The structure includes pedestrian walkways and carries two major highways across the water.
The first bridge at this location opened in 1888 as a privately built crossing, while the current concrete structure took its place in 1976. The replacement represented a major infrastructure upgrade for the area.
Four bronze military statues stand at the bridge entrances, honoring those from Putnam County who served their country. These monuments shape how people experience this crossing and mark its significance as a community landmark.
The bridge provides about 65 feet (20 meters) of clearance above the water, allowing boats and barges to pass underneath without obstruction. Pedestrians can use the sidewalks to cross the river safely on foot.
This is the only permanent vehicle crossing of the St. Johns River between Green Cove Springs and Astor, making it a critical connection point for the entire region. Many travelers do not realize how essential this single bridge is for local traffic flow.
