Pioneer City, Western theme park in Davie, Florida, US
Pioneer City was a western-themed entertainment complex in Davie, Florida, featuring a saloon, general store, post office, opera house, casino, undertaker, and barber shop spread across roughly 200 acres of land. Visitors moved through the grounds using a narrow gauge railroad and paddle-wheel boats that served as transportation.
Photographer Myron M. Weiss opened Pioneer City in 1966 as a scale replica of Dodge City, Kansas. The park operated as a recreation of a 19th century western town for visitors to experience.
Performers staged regular gunfights and bar brawls while musicians played honky-tonk music on nickelodeons throughout the grounds.
The park was located about 7 miles from major highways, so reaching it required some planning for travel time. Comfortable shoes were important since the grounds were large and required walking between different attractions.
A 19th century steam locomotive from Pennsylvania and two paddle-wheel boats from Miami were used within the park before it closed in 1968. These authentic vehicles added to the western experience for visitors.
