Golden Gate Building, Mediterranean Revival office building in Stuart, United States
The Golden Gate Building is a two-story office structure in Stuart with an unusual trapezoidal shape made from hollow clay tile construction. Raised stucco lettering decorates its facade, defining the character of this early 20th century structure.
The structure was built in 1925 by R.L. Robb Construction Company for the Golden Gate Development Company. It served as a post office and town hall during the early years of Port Sewall's incorporation.
The building served as home and studio for James Hutchinson, a member of the Florida Artist Hall of Fame. Some of his artwork remains inside, reflecting the creative life that unfolded within these walls.
The structure now operates as the Golden Gate Center for Enrichment, offering free workshops and computer lab access to visitors and the community. These educational programs are managed by House of Hope, making learning resources available at no cost.
The walls form an unusual parallelogram shape rather than meeting at right angles, creating a distinctive geometric layout in Martin County. This unconventional design makes it a notable example of creative building design from that era.
