Great Isaac Lighthouse, Maritime navigation structure on Great Isaac Cay, Bahamas.
Great Isaac Lighthouse is a white cylindrical tower standing about 151 feet tall with a black lantern room at its top. The structure sits on a coral foundation in the waters north of Bimini and serves as a navigational aid visible from considerable distances offshore.
The tower was built in 1859 to protect merchant vessels from dangerous reefs in the area. In 1969, the two lighthouse keepers vanished without trace during Hurricane Anna, an event that remains unexplained.
The place is linked to local folklore about a Grey Lady, said to be the mother of a drowned child. Stories of mysterious sounds echoing across the island during full moons have kept the legend alive among residents and visitors.
The site is only accessible by boat from Bimini, which requires planning ahead. The interior stairs have been removed, but the grounds can be walked around, so wear sturdy shoes because the coral terrain is sharp and uneven.
The ground is made of sharp coral heads that make walking on the island surprisingly difficult and treacherous. This natural formation has always challenged anyone trying to explore the area and remains a notable feature of any visit.
