Luis de Torres Synagogue, Reform synagogue in Freeport, Bahamas.
The Luis de Torres Synagogue is a reform synagogue building in Freeport situated along East Sunrise Highway between a Lutheran Church and the Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church. The structure provided space for religious services and educational programs to serve the Jewish community.
The synagogue was established in 1972 and remained the sole Jewish congregation across the Bahamas for many years. It eventually closed in 2021 during the pandemic after serving the community for nearly 50 years.
The synagogue followed Sephardic traditions and served as a gathering place where the local Jewish community came together for worship and social connection. Members gathered here to practice their faith and maintain their customs in the Bahamas.
The building sits in an easy-to-reach area of Freeport with straightforward access from East Sunrise Highway. Visitors should be aware that the synagogue is no longer active and public access may be limited.
The building honors Luis de Torres, a Sephardic Jew who sailed with Columbus when the explorer reached the Americas. The naming choice connects the Jewish presence in the New World to one of the earliest figures involved in these historic voyages.
