Compleat Angler Hotel, Historic hotel in Alice Town, Bahamas
The Compleat Angler Hotel was a three-story wooden building with 12 guest rooms and a central bar overlooking the waters north of Bimini. The structure represented simple, functional island architecture typical of the period.
The hotel was founded in 1935 after a fire destroyed its owners' original residence. It survived through the post-prohibition decades until its destruction in 2006.
The hotel drew writers and adventurers who came to work and stay in this remote island setting. It became known as a meeting place for creative people inspired by the fishing culture and natural surroundings of Bimini.
Visitors could view collections of photographs, signed books, and memorabilia from fishing expeditions displayed throughout the building. These items provided insight into the lives and experiences of those who had stayed there.
The building faced fire multiple times and was ultimately completely destroyed. The final fire in 2006 was particularly tragic, as the owner at that time lost his life while helping a guest escape.
