Windermere, Residential town in Orange County, Florida, United States.
Windermere is a town in Orange County, Florida, surrounded by thirteen lakes of the Butler Chain of Lakes. The community covers around 2.69 square miles (7 km²) and hosts roughly 3,000 inhabitants in the greater Orlando area.
A British settler named Stanley Scott founded the place in 1889 and named it after the famous lake in northwest England. After the opening of Walt Disney World in the 1970s, many executives of the company moved here.
The name was chosen by an immigrant from England who wanted to remember the lake of the same name in his homeland. Today residents use the many waterways for paddling, fishing and boat trips on weekends.
Several public ramps like the Lake Down Boat Ramp allow access to the lakes for water sports and outings. Most shorelines are bordered by private properties, so it's worth driving to the official entry points.
Some gated communities like Isleworth host golf courses where international professionals train and live. The roads between the lakes are narrow and winding, so unfamiliar visitors often take longer to find specific addresses.
