DeLand, County seat in Volusia County, Florida
DeLand is the administrative center of Volusia County in Florida, positioned between two larger metropolitan areas. The streets display Mediterranean Revival facades and buildings from the late 1800s.
The settlement was founded in 1876 by Henry Addison DeLand, who planned it as a center for citrus farming and recreation. Decades later it developed into the administrative seat of the county.
The place takes its name from its founder, whose vision remains visible in the preserved brick buildings that line its streets today. The downtown area now hosts shops and cafés under old oak trees.
A small regional airport connects the town with larger hubs nearby. Visitors can walk through downtown, and parking is available on surrounding streets.
The town attracts skydivers from around the world who train over its flat backcountry. It also houses one of the oldest private universities in Florida.
