Volusia County, Administrative county in Florida, US
Volusia County is an administrative area in Florida between the St. Johns River and the Atlantic Ocean with urban zones and nature reserves. The area spans three distinct zones: East Volusia along the coast, Southeast Volusia near New Smyrna Beach and West Volusia beside the river.
The area was established in 1854 from Orange County territory and named after a settlement. Administrative boundaries included both coastal and river areas along the St. Johns River from the beginning.
The name comes from an early settlement in the northwestern corner where Euchee Indians once lived. Today residents use fourteen public libraries that offer educational programs and digital services available throughout the region.
The area operates Votran bus service and manages Daytona Beach International Airport, both serving as transport options for visitors. The region is best explored by car as communities are spread across a wide territory.
The boundaries between the three regions are often hard for visitors to recognize as no clear transitions exist. Locals use the labels mainly for rough orientation when describing places within the area.
