Berry College, Private educational institution in Floyd County, United States.
Berry College is a private educational institution in Floyd County at the foot of Lavender Mountain, spreading across more than 27,000 acres of fields and forests. The grounds combine classroom buildings with natural landscapes, trails, and facilities that shape student life.
Martha Berry founded the institution in 1902 as the Boys Industrial School on 83 acres of inherited land, introducing a work-study program. The grounds grew over the decades through land purchases and donations until it reached its current size.
The name honors founder Martha Berry, whose vision of hands-on education still shapes daily life across the grounds. Students work in workshops, on farms, and in different facilities while they study, giving the place an active character that visitors can see when walking through campus.
Visitors can explore long trails through forests and open land, experiencing the scale of the grounds firsthand. The wildlife refuge areas offer walking and wildlife viewing, especially in the early morning or late afternoon hours.
The campus supports a population of around 2,000 deer in designated refuge areas, where visitors and students can observe them during outdoor activities. The size of the grounds makes it the largest contiguous college campus in the world.
