Buckhead is a neighborhood in northern Atlanta known for its office towers, hotels, and shopping centers. The main arteries Peachtree Road and Piedmont Road cross here, forming a center around which shops, restaurants, and residential complexes spread.
The neighborhood owes its name to Henry Irby, who killed a large deer in the late 19th century and hung its head in a highly visible spot. This location became a meeting point and gave the growing area its unusual name.
The Swan House at the Atlanta History Center shows the preference for classical design that many residents in this neighborhood have maintained for decades. The exhibits there help visitors understand why elegance and refined architecture matter so much here.
The Buckhead MARTA station connects the neighborhood to the rest of the city and makes access easy without a car. Georgia State Route 400 also runs through the area, making it convenient for travelers with their own vehicle.
Lenox Square opened in 1959 as one of the first enclosed shopping malls in the US and helped shape a new concept of retail. Many visitors still come here to browse the many stores distributed across several levels.
