Western and Atlantic 3 “General”
Western and Atlantic 3 “General”, Tender locomotive at Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History in Kennesaw, United States.
The Western and Atlantic 3 General, constructed in 1855 by Rogers Locomotive Works, features a 4-4-0 wheel configuration and stands as a prime example of nineteenth-century rail engineering.
The locomotive gained recognition during the Great Locomotive Chase of 1862, when Union soldiers seized it from Big Shanty station in an attempt to disrupt Confederate supply lines.
The General represents the technological advancement of American railroads and serves as a centerpiece exhibit documenting transportation development during the Civil War period.
Visitors can examine this historic locomotive at the Southern Museum, which maintains regular operating hours and provides detailed information about railroad mechanical systems.
Following its retirement in 1891, the locomotive underwent preservation efforts and received National Register of Historic Places designation in 1973.
