Western and Atlantic 3 “General”, Tender locomotive at Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History in Kennesaw, United States.
The Western and Atlantic 3 General is a steam locomotive in Kennesaw, Georgia, built in 1855 by Rogers Locomotive Works with a 4-4-0 wheel arrangement. The machine shows typical features of American locomotives from this period, including a large smokestack and visible cab.
Union soldiers stole the machine in 1862 from Big Shanty station in an attempt to disrupt Confederate supply lines. The chase ended after hours when the locomotive ran out of fuel.
The locomotive carries its original name from the day it was completed and draws railway enthusiasts interested in mid-nineteenth-century engineering. Visitors today see the actual casing and mechanics that were in service during wartime operations.
The museum displays the locomotive in a covered hall accessible on foot. Information panels around the exhibit explain technical details and historical context.
After retirement in 1891, the locomotive underwent several restorations before finding its current home. It received National Register of Historic Places listing in 1973.
