Mill Cove Complex, Archaeological site in Jacksonville, Florida, US.
The Mill Cove Complex consists of two sand mounds rising from high bluffs along the St. Johns River, marking where people lived and worked centuries ago. The elevated location provides clear views of the river and reveals how the site was positioned to take advantage of water access and natural defenses.
People lived at this site from around the 10th to 13th century, using one of the mounds primarily as a burial ground during this span. Archaeological work from 1999 to 2002 uncovered how this mound served as an important burial center across multiple generations.
The residents here traded shells and local plants for copper items and ceremonial objects, showing how connected they were to distant communities. Such exchanges reveal the importance of this location as a trading hub within larger regional networks.
The site is actively studied by the University of North Florida, so visitor access may be limited and you should ask ahead about visiting possibilities. The position on high bluffs means the terrain can be challenging to navigate in some areas.
Excavations uncovered a rare copper mask ornament featuring a deity figure typically linked to a distant civilization far to the north. This discovery suggests the trading connections of this community extended much farther than previously expected.
