White Point Gardens, Public park in Charleston, United States
White Point Gardens is a public park at the tip of the peninsula, spanning roughly 5.7 acres with mature oak trees, memorials, and sweeping views of Charleston Harbor and Fort Sumter. The space is organized through wide walking paths, with benches placed throughout for rest, and open grassy areas bordered by East Battery, Murray Boulevard, King Street, and South Battery.
The site functioned as a defensive fortification during the Civil War and holds numerous cannons from both the Revolutionary War and Civil War eras. These guns served as the primary defenses protecting the harbor and demonstrate the military importance of this peninsula tip throughout American conflict periods.
The park contains several memorials dedicated to vessels that played important roles in American military history, including the submarine USS Amberjack and the H.L. Hunley. Walking through the grounds, visitors encounter these stone markers that reflect the area's deep connection to naval affairs and wartime experiences.
The park features wide, level paths that are easy to walk on, with shaded benches placed throughout for comfortable breaks under the oak trees. Since the location sits centrally and borders accessible streets, visitors can arrive and depart on their own schedule without needing special arrangements or planning.
Two cannons recovered in 1900 from the sunken warship USS Keokuk stand in the park, creating a direct link to that specific naval vessel and its battle. These rare artifacts are among the few remaining pieces of physical evidence from that particular ship's story.
