Padgett-Thomas Barracks, Military college barracks at The Citadel in Charleston, United States.
Padgett-Thomas Barracks is an eight-story tower on The Citadel campus in Charleston that houses 560 cadets. The structure rises above the grounds and surrounds a central quadrangle where galleries connect the different levels.
Built in 1922 as the first structure on the new campus, this building marked the start of the institution's growth. A complete renovation in 2004 updated the interior while preserving its original architectural design.
The barracks house Second Battalion companies alongside the Regimental Band and Pipes, which shape daily cadet routines. These groups form the core of military training traditions visible throughout the building.
The building is well organized internally, with galleries circling the central quadrangle to help with navigation. Individual cadet rooms are small and practical, reflecting the military training environment.
Four spiral staircases positioned at the corners of the rectangular building connect all the floors. This design allows efficient movement of cadets while creating a balanced internal layout.
