Beneventum Plantation House, Georgian plantation house in Georgetown County, United States.
Beneventum Plantation House is a two-story residence in Georgetown County featuring a one-story covered porch across the middle of its front with five evenly-spaced windows. The main structure shows Georgian design principles, with additions built at the rear section at a later date.
The estate was originally built as Prospect Hill Plantation around 1750 and was one of the early plantation houses in the region. It received substantial alterations at the rear section approximately in 1800.
Christopher Gadsden, who designed the historic 'Don't Tread on Me' flag and served as brigadier general in the Continental Army, resided at this estate.
The house remains in private ownership and cannot be entered by visitors, but a state historical marker is visible from the public road along Beneventum Road. You can view the exterior from the public right of way and read information on the roadside marker.
The name Beneventum was given to the estate in 1829 by John Julius Pringle, who chose an Italian term meaning good wind to reflect its favorable river-crossing location. This deliberate naming shows how the site's geography influenced local choices during that era.
