Forest Hill, Residential neighborhood in San Francisco, US

Forest Hill is a residential neighborhood in San Francisco featuring detached homes along tree-lined streets with Mediterranean and Edwardian architectural styles. The area sits near Golden Gate Park with distinctive paved streets and tree-covered blocks that create a cohesive residential setting.

The neighborhood was established in 1912 by real estate developer John A. McLaren as part of the Forest Hill Gardens project, built on land formerly owned by Adolph Sutro. This founding period shaped the urban design that remains visible today.

The neighborhood's Forest Hill Association clubhouse serves as a gathering place where residents come together for regular community events. You can sense the strong neighborhood identity through these ongoing gatherings that happen throughout the year.

The neighborhood is easily accessible via multiple transit options including Muni trains and buses, with quick access to Interstate 280 as well. Its proximity to Golden Gate Park makes it a good base for exploring this part of the city.

The streets were originally built for horse carriages and are wider than standard city streets, a quirk that was not officially accepted by the city until 1978. You can still notice this unusual street width when walking through the neighborhood today.
