Sigmund Stern Recreation Grove, Public park in Parkside District, San Francisco, United States.
Sigmund Stern Recreation Grove is a park covering about 33 acres with open meadows, forested areas, and a natural lake. The grounds include sports fields, picnic tables, and quiet spaces nestled among eucalyptus and redwood trees.
Rosalie Meyer Stern donated the land to San Francisco in 1931, after which the Works Progress Administration built the initial facilities during the Great Depression. Summertime concerts in a natural amphitheater setting began in 1938.
Since 1938, the Stern Grove Festival has presented free summer concerts in the natural amphitheater, drawing audiences of up to 20,000 people.
The park opens at 5 AM and closes at midnight, offering multiple activity areas and rest spots spread across the grounds. Wear sturdy shoes since the terrain includes forest paths and open meadows.
A lake within the park is one of only three natural lakes found within San Francisco city limits. This body of water offers a rare glimpse of unaltered nature in a densely urban area.
