San Francisco Zoo, Zoo at Lake Merced, San Francisco, United States
The San Francisco Zoo spans 100 acres between Lake Merced and the Pacific Ocean, housing more than 2,000 animals representing 250 different species.
The zoo opened in 1929 as Fleishhacker Zoo, receiving its first animals from Golden Gate Park, including zebras, cape buffalo, monkeys, and elephants.
The San Francisco Zoological Society manages educational programs and conservation initiatives to protect endangered species and maintain genetic diversity through Species Survival Plans.
The entrance is located on Sloat Boulevard, one block south of the Muni Metro L Taraval line, with the facility operating every day throughout the year.
In 2024, the San Francisco Zoo signed an agreement with China to receive Giant Pandas, marking a new chapter in international wildlife cooperation.
