The JW Marriott San Francisco Union Square is a tall hotel whose upper facade is reddish-brown brick laid in a grid, with rows of deeply recessed arched windows framed in pale stone. Below the brick sits a light gray base wrapped by a band of small upward-pointing lamps, and a projecting blue metal-and-glass canopy arches over the entrance on thick pale columns. It holds 438 air-conditioned guest rooms, 11 suites and seven studios.

Designed by architect and developer John Portman, the hotel opened in 1987 as The Portman. Pan Pacific Hotels, a division of Tokyu Corporation, bought it on 1 June 1990 and renamed it The Pan Pacific Hotel San Francisco. Oxford Lodging paid $45 million in 2003; Ashford Hospitality Trust bought it for $95 million in 2006 and signed a management deal with Marriott International that April, creating the JW Marriott. Thayer Lodging bought it in 2011, Chesapeake Lodging Trust in 2014, and Park Hotels & Resorts, which absorbed Chesapeake in 2019, owns it today.

The hotel opened in 1987 as The Portman, named for its architect and developer John Portman. It became The Pan Pacific Hotel San Francisco in 1990 and took the JW Marriott name in 2006 after Ashford Hospitality Trust signed a management deal with Marriott International.

The hotel stands at 500 Post Street, a short walk from Union Square and the Financial District. The entrance sits under a blue metal-and-glass canopy on the lower grey base, with the brick tower rising above. Guest rooms number 438, with 11 suites and seven studios, each with an ergonomic workspace and complimentary wifi.
