San Francisco Playhouse, Theatre in Union Square, San Francisco, US.
San Francisco Playhouse is a theater on Post Street in the Union Square neighborhood of San Francisco. The house seats close to 200 people and stages a mix of contemporary plays, classic dramas, and Broadway musicals throughout the year.
The theater was founded in 2003 and gradually built a reputation within the Bay Area arts scene over the following years. During that time it received several awards from the Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle.
The playhouse is known for giving new playwrights a platform to stage their work in front of a real audience. This makes many productions feel like discoveries, with stories and voices that are hard to find in larger venues.
The theater sits in central San Francisco, so it is easy to reach on foot or by public transit from most parts of the city. Booking ahead is a good idea since the house is small and seats fill up quickly.
The playhouse received a National Theatre Company grant that made it eligible for the Regional Tony Award, a recognition normally associated with much larger companies. Very few theaters at this scale earn that kind of national attention.
