Lopez Lake, Recreation lake in San Luis Obispo County, California, US.
Lopez Lake is a reservoir near Arroyo Grande in San Luis Obispo County, California, formed by a dam built across Arroyo Grande Creek. The lake sits among rolling hills and dry canyons, with a shoreline that winds through several coves used for boating, swimming, and fishing.
The Lopez Dam was completed in 1969 to supply drinking water to several towns in San Luis Obispo County and to support farming in the Arroyo Grande Valley. Over the following decades, the area around the reservoir was gradually developed into a recreation zone open to the public.
The land around the lake has long been part of Chumash territory, and traces of their presence can be found in the nearby canyons. Rock art and archaeological sites have been documented in the area, making a walk along the shoreline feel like more than just a stroll.
The lake is about 6 miles (10 km) east of Arroyo Grande and is easiest to reach by car, with a fee required to enter the recreation area. Visiting outside the peak summer months means fewer crowds at the water's edge and easier access to campsites and boat launches.
During the winters of 2022 and 2023, water levels rose high enough to send water over the spillway for the first time in several decades. Most visitors who come to the lake will never witness that kind of overflow during their lifetime.
