Pacific Heights, Residential district in San Francisco, US
Pacific Heights is a residential district in San Francisco, stretching between Union Street and Bush Street along a ridge. The streets slope downward on both sides, with rows of houses facing the bay and the bridge in the distance.
Small Victorian homes stood here from the 1870s onward, but the 1906 earthquake changed the landscape entirely. Wealthy families rebuilt with larger mansions, transforming the ridge into a different kind of neighborhood.
The steep streets and staircases shape how residents move through the area and meet their neighbors each day. Front gardens and narrow sidewalks line many blocks, giving each stretch a quiet residential character.
Fillmore Street runs through the area with shops, cafés, and smaller stores for everyday needs. Alta Plaza and Lafayette Parks offer open space for resting or taking short walks within the neighborhood.
The area sits at roughly 370 feet (113 meters) above sea level, making it one of the highest residential parts of the city. From this elevation, much of the bay remains visible without obstruction.
