Capitola Beach is a south-facing sandy beach along Monterey Bay featuring a large fishing pier and multicolored buildings on its shoreline. Capitola Beach faces south into Soquel Cove, not Monterey Bay, and its sand sits at the mouth of Soquel Creek. The creek mouth shifts the sand seasonally, and winter storms have repeatedly washed away the beach and damaged the Esplanade seawall, so the shoreline visitors see is rebuilt and reshaped rather than fixed.
