Venetian Court, Historic seaside resort in Capitola, United States.
Venetian Court is a historic resort set along the waterfront in Capitola, consisting of two rows of colorful buildings styled with Mediterranean and Spanish Colonial Revival details. The complex holds 24 privately owned townhouses available for vacation rental and a 17-unit hotel section.
Construction of the resort began in 1924 under architects Henry J. Roth and Wolfe & Higgins as one of California's earliest residential condominium projects. A major storm in 1926 prompted the building of a protective sea wall that still shields the structures today.
The colorful facades emerged in the 1960s when resident Ann Bucher painted her unit pink after a European journey, inspiring other owners to add their own hues. This grassroots painting movement turned the place into a visual expression of personal creativity and individuality.
The grounds are easily walkable and offer open areas for exploration and photography throughout the day. Visit in late afternoon or early evening when sunlight brings out the vibrant hues of the buildings most effectively.
During renovations, workers uncovered original redwood flooring and intricate exterior decorative castings hidden beneath newer layers. These discovered details reveal the craftsmanship and attention to detail that early builders put into every part of the structures.
