Santa Cruz Looff Carousel and Roller Coaster, Historic amusement rides at Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, California
The Santa Cruz Looff Carousel and Roller Coaster are two historic amusement rides sitting side by side on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk in California. The carousel features hand-carved wooden horses, while the red and white wooden coaster runs along the waterfront on tight curves.
Charles Looff installed the carousel on the Boardwalk in 1911, and his son added the wooden roller coaster in 1924. Both rides are now listed as a National Historic Landmark, recognizing their place among the earliest surviving examples of American amusement park construction.
The ring-toss game at the carousel is still played the same way it was over a century ago, with riders reaching out from their horses to grab a metal ring for a free ride. That small gesture ties together people of very different ages who all share the same memory of trying to catch the ring.
The rides sit right on the beach and are easy to find from the parking area, with clear signs along the way. Visiting outside of summer weekends tends to mean shorter waits and a calmer experience overall.
The carousel is accompanied by three original band organs, one of them a Ruth and Sohn model from 1894 with 342 pipes that plays continuously. This instrument is one of the very few of its kind still working on the American West Coast.
