Museum of Art and History

The Museum of Art and History sits in the McPherson Center along Front Street and shows contemporary art exhibitions alongside objects from local history. The galleries display pieces from artists and historical items spanning the Monterey Bay region.

The institution formed in 1996 by bringing together an art museum from 1982 and a historical society from 1954. This joining combined two separate organizations focused on art and local history into one place.

The museum presents how people in the Monterey Bay region lived and created art through objects displayed in its galleries. Visitors can trace everyday life from the past to today by looking at the things residents left behind.

The museum is open on most days of the week with wheelchair access throughout the building for all visitors. Check ahead before your visit to confirm which days work best for you to see the current exhibitions.

The museum manages three historical buildings scattered across the county including an old cemetery, a former jail, and a rare octagonal house. These separate locations give visitors extra places to explore beyond the main galleries downtown.
