Gundlach Bundschu, Historic winery in Sonoma Valley, US

Gundlach Bundschu is a winery in Sonoma Valley set on a 320-acre Rhinefarm estate at the base of the Mayacamas Mountains, producing Bordeaux reds and cool-climate varietals. A historic building serves as the heart of the property where tastings and tours of the production facilities take place.

Jacob Gundlach, a Bavarian immigrant, founded the winery in 1858, making it California's oldest family-owned wine producer still in operation. During Prohibition, the family sustained itself by selling grapes for sacramental wine and raising livestock on the land.

The winery keeps its German roots alive through six generations of family ownership and regularly hosts music events on the property, including the annual Huichica Festival. Visitors experience this cultural tradition during their time on the estate.

Visitors can arrange wine tastings in the historic building, take tours of the production facilities, and purchase bottles directly from the property. The site is accessible for different types of visits depending on available time and interests.

The family kept operations going during Prohibition by selling grapes for sacramental wine production while simultaneously raising cattle on the property. This adaptation allowed the winery to survive economically during a challenging era.
