Cupertino, Technology hub in Santa Clara County, US
Cupertino is a city in Santa Clara County in western California, stretching between the flat valley floor and the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The area is mostly composed of residential neighborhoods with single-family homes and wide avenues, interrupted by office campuses and green spaces along the main roads.
Until the mid-20th century the area was covered mainly by orchards growing plums and cherries. After the Second World War the arrival of electronics companies and residential developments grew rapidly, replacing almost all of the farming landscape.
In public parks and along the pathways around major tech campuses you will often see jogging groups and employees picking up coffee or sitting outside during lunch breaks. The restaurants and cafés cater to an international clientele who come from many countries to work or study here.
The streets are wide and designed for cars, so it helps to have a vehicle or use local rideshare services. For walking, the parks and green spaces in residential areas are accessible during daytime and well maintained.
The name of the city comes from a small chapel that Italian settlers built in the 19th century and named after a pilgrimage site near Turin. Today only a few traces remain of that rural past, but the name itself stands as the only reminder of the early residents.
