During the Gold Rush of 1849, this area transformed from a small settlement into a busy district filled with gambling houses and entertainment establishments. The district quickly developed into a center of nightlife that drew miners and sailors from across the region.
Sailors in the 1860s gave the district its name after comparing it to the North African coast, known for similar port activities. Today, only a few street signs and historical markers recall the former identity of this area.
This area connects directly to Portsmouth Square and extends east toward the original shipping docks at Buena Vista Cove. Visitors can explore the neighborhood on foot, as most historic sites lie within a few blocks.
By 1900, this district housed several dance halls where visitors took part in a dance performed in a counter-clockwise direction. This dance movement became a defining feature of the local entertainment scene during that era.
