San Jose Steam Railroad Museum, Railroad museum project in San Jose, California
The San Jose Steam Railroad Museum is a museum facility that houses historic locomotives, including Southern Pacific 2479 and Southern Pacific 1215, along with railway equipment and artifacts. The site features a six-stall roundhouse, an 80-foot turntable, and several restored passenger coaches spanning the railway's operational era.
The museum project was initiated in 1992 by the California Trolley and Railroad Corporation, and soon after received the historic Lenzen Roundhouse as a donation from Southern Pacific Railroad. This foundation allowed the organization to begin preserving and displaying these important railway structures.
The collection displays restored passenger coaches from the 1920s that reflect how rail travel shaped regional transportation. Visitors can observe how these cars were designed and used by people traveling through California decades ago.
Weekends offer the best chance to see active restoration work on Southern Pacific 2479 and observe the team in action. Plan ahead to check if special events or fairground activities might affect access to the museum grounds.
The site preserves Little Buttercup, a rare Santa Fe 5 steam locomotive from 1899 that was transferred from the California State Railroad Museum in 2008. This particular locomotive remains one of the less visible treasures that visitors often miss when touring the grounds.
